Diamond Pet Foods is produced in Meta, MO. Diamond was founded in 1970 when two brothers-in-law, Gary Schell and Richard Kampeter, bought Milling Meta Co., which produced livestock feed and dog food. Distribution was limited to within 100 miles of Meta and only 5% of the food produced was dog food.
Gary and Rich had a goal. They believed every pet was worthy of the best nutrition, whether it was an expensive show animal or a child's free puppy or kitten. They wanted to produce a premium pet food, made from high-quality ingredients and using the best equipment, yet still at a reasonable price. The answer was in staying conservative on marketing and advertising spending, which can drastically increase the costs of pet food.
The plant was rebuilt and modernized with state-of-the-art equipment. Veterinarians and nutritionists were hired to formulate and constantly improve the quality of foods.
Today, the plant is state-of-the-art in every way. Diamond is fed by professional breeders, trainers, veterinarians and nutrition-conscious pet owners in all fifty states and in over seventy foreign countries. Sales have risen at a record rate and brand loyalty is at an all time high.
Diamond expanded its manufacturing capacity to San Joaquin County in California in 1999 and in South Carolina in 2002. Diamond Pet Foods is still owned and managed by the Schell and Kampeter family. Their belief, that a super-premium pet food does not have to cost more, is still the philosophy of Diamond Pet Foods today.
